Muslims go ballistic over restoration of Old City synagogue

After 72 years in the Moslem Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City, a refurbished synagogue located 80 meters from the Temple Mount opened its doors. Restoration work of the Ohel Yitzhak synagogue was conducted by Israel's Antiquities Authority who attempted as much as possible to remain true to the building's original style.

The synagogue opened its doors recently, creating outrage among Moslem and Christian and Greek orthodox residents and religious officials, who immediately set up an emergency meeting to condemn what the perceive as the 'Jewish invasion' of the Old City.

Let's go to the videotape. I'll have a comment at the end.

I saw this synagogue on Monday when I prayed on the roof of a yeshiva building that overlooks the Temple Mount. This building is across the street from the building on which I prayed and it faces the Temple Mount dead on but at ground level. The building is gorgeous and it's on the main street that leads to the Temple Mount.

If Jews cannot restore ancient synagogues without provoking 'Muslim outrage' what hope is there for any accommodation?

Jews in Jerusalem? What could you guys have been thinking? As a real Christian(the sort who believes what the Bible says), I say "congratulations!" These "palestinian christians" seem to think that by siding with the muslims they can convince them that they are friends. Perhaps they should ask their brothers in Gaza how that is working out.

As a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, I am ashamed and apologize for what that bishop participated in. Only fear of Muslim reactions over centuries could possibly have erased the memory of the Muslim horrors inflicted on his Orthodox brethren since the invention of Islam. I weep.

Guess what Carl? There isn't and there never was.

I covered this story over at my place as well, and it's important that people realize that this synagogue was desecrated and destroyed during the Jordanian occupation prior to 1967..just like all the other Jewish Holy sites in Arab hands.

It still simply astounds me that the Israelis were too clueless to simply repatriate these Jordanian citizens west of the Jordan back across the border to their own country.

Why is there a shul in the Moslem quarter?

Because until 1948 the Jewish majority of the Old City used to live there.
